FAQ

 What's the point of widescreen?

Video games, movies, and television shows have embraced widescreen.
Widescreen gives a larger viewing area and a more modern feel.
Some common widescreen resolutions are "1280x720" "1600x900" and "1920x1080".
Widescreen is also suited better for YouTube and Let's Plays.
These widescreen patches are a fantastic way to bring new life into your old games.

How do I use widescreen patches?

Download the latest version of PCSX2 which has built-in widescreen support.
Put the .pnach files in the "cheats_ws" folder in the PCSX2 directory.
Start PCSX2, go to System, and make sure "Enable Widescreen Patches" is checked.
You can enable the console to ensure that the emulator has found the patch.

Open PCSX2 > Config > Emulation Settings.
Go to GS Window, Aspect Ratio, and ensure "Widescreen (16:9)" is selected.

If the emulator doesn't seem to be locating the cheats, it may be because your PCSX2 directory is searching the wrong folder.
This is common if there are multiple installations of PCSX2, or if you're using a shortcut to it.
Be sure to search My Documents, Program Files and desktop and make sure it's consistent.

When toggling widescreen hacks on/off using "Enable Cheats", it's recommend you do it from a fresh boot everytime.
If you save your game with widescreen hacks on and reload the save without them enabled, they won't be applied anymore.
If you load a "widescreen hack save state" from a "cheats disabled" config, you'll likely still have it enabled.

 How do the patches work?

PCSX2 searches the "cheats_ws" folder and locates the code of the game and the .pnach file.
.pnach files find the "field of view" address and make it narrower.
Note that for the most part, this will only affect the 3D environments.

2D elements, such as health bars, dialogue boxes and menus, are usually unaffected and will still be stretched a little.
Backgrounds are usually fine when stretched, while text and character portraits tend to suffer more.
It is possible to make 2D elements narrower as well, but this is usually more difficult.

Why is there more than one patch for a single game?

Some notable games, such as Resident Evil Outbreak and Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne,
have alternate CRCs, even though they're for the same region.
Test each patch to see which one you need.

I want to request a game!

You can request a widescreen patch on the PCSX2 forum:  Widescreen Game Patches.
